Burns After Reading: 13

I grow older and maybe wiser. Making no plans means plans work out perfectly. This time.

Serendipitous Jesse Welles at Asheville Yards

Welcome to the Birthday edition! This month the top story is a continuation. Last month I regaled (assaulted?) subscribers with a spoken word version of a Jesse Welles song I loved. If you haven't listened, you really should subscribe. Maybe you can get through it without cringing to death. Maybe you'll be entertained.

For my Birthday, I went to Asheville without any set plans. Just a vague idea to hang out with family and cool off in the mountains.

After an amazing dinner at Red Ginger Dimsum & Tapas, my Brother-in-Law, Harrison was saying how many music venues there are around downtown Asheville. I popped open Concert-Map and was surprised to see that Jesse Welles was playing around the corner RIGHT THEN at Asheville Yards. Dinner was so fast that we were on-time to catch the main act.

We walked the 60 seconds from dinner to the venue and could hear that Jesse had started. Tickets were about 45 bucks and still for sale, so of course I bought them. Harry was kind enough to walk the leftovers back to the car while Kat and I hurried in.

The show was awesome. The real gift though was how everything worked out effortlessly and I said "Yes" instead of coming up with reasons why things couldn't or wouldn't work. It seems like so much of my life is about trying to wrangle plans together that are barely workable into something that doesn't suck. Or that when you do make plans, something pops up that gets in the way. Well, not on this Birthday Weekend. We didn't plan anything and everything worked out better than I could have planned.

After a few beers, a good show, and a stop at the merch booth, I realized that all the problems I face in life are because I don't own a t-shirt emblazoned with a screaming bald eagle flying through lightning bolts. I've solved this problem and am looking forward to carefree days ahead.

I like to think the eagle is screaming lightning bolts.
